Hello gentlemen! If you haven't noticed I was on a role today as I finally started advertising on twitter and managed to fill up our league. That means we are about ready to start recruiting for those of you that don't know, here's how our recruiting process works:

Please note: I changed the amount of recruiting points given for any day from 10 to 100, I hope that it will make this process quicker as well as make the transition into the next few years a little easier as teams start to add points from growing "prestige." I'm also changing how programs get points according to "prestige." We'll be awarding a point per win as opposed to every 5 (but you don't have to worry about using those until season 2!)

Anyway, you have those 100 points to place how many ever on whatever player(s) you choose. Your bids are due by 7:00pm EST (to league email: bacbcleagueoffice@gmail.com!) on the day listed on the forum home page. If you are the team that is closest in proximity to a player bidding on a player on any given day, you will be given a 10 point bonus on that player per day.

A player chooses what team to commit to on the day (starting with the first day he receives a bid) equal to how many teams are bidding on him.

If you have bids on players that will put you over the roster maximum (and minimum for that matter) of 15, then the ones with the higher rated player will be taken into account first. Sounds like a ton of fun! I'm just a little confused when you say prestige. Can you explain that a little to me?

Yessir Tony! It's the process by which we separate the great programs from the less than stellar programs. It's how we will have teams become like Duke while others become the Rutgers while also separating the conferences. Basically you have 100 recruiting points to use per day this season, but next year that number will grow. You'll get 1 extra point for each win you get. And then bonus points awarded as such:

1 - Conference Regular Season Championship
2 - Visit to the NCAA Tournament
3 - Conference Tournament Championship
5 - NCAA Tournament Championship

These points continue to grow year-to-year and the teams in the higher conferences will grow while the teams coming in the newest conference will just have the 100. Hope this helps!

I'm just curious as to how athleticism effects a recruit's ranking. I know it's part of the game, but I'd like to try to understand its importance.

Definitely Eli. Basically it's there for a couple of different reasons, but the main thing it does is add to the player's potential. They have a better chance of vastly improving if their athleticism ranking is higher. It also has to do with the likelihood that the player can change to momentum of the game with a single play, like a highlight reel dunk. Also, has a small impact on defensive rating when it comes to both man-to-man and zone defenses given that it has to do with the length of the player.

Since this barrel of monkeys is open, I have a few questions about the game engine itself:

-You stated that positions don't really matter in recruiting, but I assume they matter in game play? For instance, if I have a 6'1" guard with high ratings in rebounding and blocking, does his height lead to him being abused if I play him at C or PF?

-To continue the scenario above, do high rebounding and blocking ratings matter more for an inside player than an outside player or do they simply contribute to a team rating without much regard to position?

-When players age/develop between seasons, are lousy rating more likely to improve than good ratings? Is development in any way position-specific?

In short, we're into recruiting, but most of us (or maybe it's just me:-) don't know much of anything about the game that we're recruiting for. Is there a primer anywhere describing how the game was designed (not in terms of code, just how player ratings and team strategy feed into game outcomes)?

I'm glad these questions were asked because I think I answered all of these in previous incarnations of this league, but I forgot to answer them here.

In order:

- Yes, those ratings are compared to the rest of the players at his given height and weight. A 6'1" 165lb guard will have problems with a 6'8" PF even if his rebounding, blocking, etc. is high.

- Rebouding and blocking ratings should (I say should because this game is still in its experimental stage and I'm using this to see what changes I have to make and de-bug before I actually go and sell it) matter more for inside players than outside players.

- Lousy ratings are not more likely to improve unless the coach declares that he would like to develop a lousy rating as opposed to a good one.

- As stated, this game is in its infancy still in just its third attempt so there are going to be issues. I suppose I could write up a primer for how player ratings and things feed into the game. Most of them are fairly obvious, but it's something I'll work on. The only real confusing one (I think) is athleticism and I tried to outline that above as well as I could.

Is it things like, speed means more in man-to-man defense than zone where intelligence and knowing where you should be on that court?

Yeah, things like that. I'm working on a primer to help you guys out right now.

I put an explanation of each player rating in the bylaws forum. Hopefully that helps you guys out when it comes to how player rankings effect certain strategies in the game.

What are you going to do about the two guys that haven't checked in since February?

They've both checked in with me via e-mail and are aware that we're starting recruiting on Monday. They're brothers and Strategist is the only one in this league that was in a previous incarnation, so he'll be here before then.

I'm sorry guys. Everytime I try to start one of these up, something comes up in my personal life that forces me to shut this down. It appears that may be the case again and I've come to the realization that no matter how hard I try, that this is too much of an undertaking for me. I appreciate the time you guys all gave to this thing and I wish I could reward it with an enjoyable product, but I just don't have the ability to at this time and everytime I think I do it is snatched from me. I stink, I know but somethings are more important to me than sim college basketball (as much as I would love to have a league like this). Sorry fellas and I hope none of you are too upset.
